A Great Place for Theater Buffs
Situated only steps from Boston’s renowned theater district you’ll be able to catch all the shows which come to town. You’ll be steps away from The Wilbur theater, the Wang Theater, the Charles Playhouse and more.
Boston’s theater district is full of history dating back to the 19th century. The area was marshy and sparsely settled until commercial activity began on Washington Street. This brought more out-of-towners to Boston with a demand for entertainment. The Lion Theater was the first, built in 1835, featured plays and eventually became a concert hall. By the early 1900s, the theater district came into full swing with vaudeville, burlesque and movie houses opening. Later, parts of the area became known as the “Combat Zone” with more risque offerings.
But today, the area has been cleaned up and revitalized and there are many great options for catching a local or visiting show. The Wang Theater, the largest in the neighborhood, was opened in 1925 as the Metropolitan. The 1500-seat Shubert Theater has maintained its ornate lobby and entrance and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Paramount, opened in 1932 by Paramount Pictures, now shows U.S. premiers, international film festivals and student productions. The Cutler Majestic is a member of the National League of Historic American Theaters.
Whether it’s Hamilton or The Blue Man Group, a comedy show, or the ballet, a concert or a student production, at Luka on the Common you’ll be right near all the action!
